Canned Food Sculpting Moved to Doc Bryan

For the second year, student groups will create canned food sculptures in a WonderWeek 2012 competition that not only unleashes creativity, but provide food for local families in need. Construction of projects will begin this weekend in the Doc Bryan Student Services Building.

Sculptures may cover a six feet by six feet area and be no taller than the ceiling allows. Any number of cans may be used, but officials suggest most structures require 100 or more.

Groups are encouraged to be creative and experiment with different sizes of cans and other non-perishable food items. Sculptures are not required to relate to school spirit or the organization creating it.

Applications for the canned food sculpture competition should be submitted to the Office of Student Services in Doc Bryan by Friday, Feb. 10.

Students will be able to work on their creations in the Doc Bryan Student Services Building Saturday and Sunday from 4-10 p.m., and Monday, Feb. 11 and Tuesday, Feb. 12 from 8 a.m.-11:45 p.m.

Judging of the contest will take place on Wednesday, Feb. 15. Works will be scored on creativity, structure and design. Judges will be members of the Arkansas Tech community, and members of the public may vote in exchange for a donation.

Upon completion of WonderWeek, the food used to create each sculpture will be donated to Main Street Mission and benefit the SIFE “Let’s Can Hunger” project. SIFE has donated more than 10,000 pounds of food in recent years to local food pantries as part of the project.

The third annual WonderWeek will be held Monday, Feb. 13 through Saturday, Feb. 18 on the Arkansas Tech campus, and the series of events are designed to promote unity, diversity and campus involvement.

Additional competitions include “The Olympiad: Chariot Races,” “Best Mocktail at Vegas Night” and “Best Chili Cook-off at Gold Rush.”
