The Arkansas Tech University Board of Trustees meeting on Thursday included a visit from Shane Broadway, interim director of the Arkansas Department of Higher Education.

“Arkansas Tech University is performing exceedingly well,” said Broadway (photographed) when addressing trustees. “The numbers speak for themselves. Enrollment is important because getting students on campus is the first step in the process, but the most important thing is getting those students out as graduates. We have made significant progress toward our goal of increasing the percentage of our state’s adult population that has a college degree, and the leadership of Arkansas Tech has played a large role in that.”

Enrollment at Arkansas Tech has increased by 158 percent since 1997. The university has established a record enrollment in each of the last 14 years, including a school-record 10,949 students for fall 2012.

Arkansas Tech awarded more than 2,000 degrees for the first time in school history during the 2011-12 academic year. Annual degree production at Arkansas Tech has increased by 151 percent since the year 2000.

With a graduation rate of 42.7 percent, Arkansas Tech ranks No. 2 among all four-year public colleges and universities in Arkansas.

“We appreciate your excellent work,” said Arkansas Tech President Dr. Robert C. Brown to Broadway on Thursday. “You have displayed sound judgment and even-handedness. Yours is not an easy job, but you have made it look easy.”

Broadway was accompanied on Thursday by Dr. Olin Cook of Russellville, chair of the Arkansas Higher Education Coordinating Board.
