Biofeedback Lab Aids Students With Stress

The Arkansas Tech University Health and Wellness Center will host an open house for its new biofeedback lab on Monday, Feb. 26, from 4-5 p.m. in Doc Bryan Student Services Center suite 119.

Designed to help students cope with and reduce stress, the biofeedback lab was built during the recent remodel of the ATU Health and Wellness Center.

“Biofeedback uses technologies like video games and guided meditations to teach relaxation techniques, concentration skills and healthy coping responses,” said Kristy Davis, associate dean for health and wellness at ATU. “It teaches people to become aware of their physiological responses such as heart rate increases, while providing techniques like deep breathing, visualization or mindfulness to consciously reset the body’s conditioned responses.”

Davis added that the resources in the biofeedback lab can assist students who struggle with concentration or have difficulty with negative or self-critical thoughts.

Tools available in the lab include computers, biofeedback software, meditation compact discs and cushions, essential oils and diffuser as well as yoga mats.

“Once students learn the processes, they don’t need to come to the lab to practice them in their lives,” said Davis, “but consistent practice in the lab is encouraged while students are learning the techniques.”

During the week following the open house, the ATU Health and Wellness Center will host biofeedback lab orientation sessions on Tuesday, Feb. 27, from 12:30-1:30 p.m.; Wednesday, Feb. 28, from 2-3 p.m.; Thursday, March 1, from 3-4 p.m.; and Friday, March 2, from noon-1 p.m. Light refreshments will be served at each orientation session.

The biofeedback lab is open weekdays from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Appointments are preferred, but walk-ins are welcome. To schedule a session, call (479) 968-0329 or visit the Health and Wellness Center in Doc Bryan suite 119. It is not necessary to be a client of ATU Counseling Services to use the biofeedback lab.
