Barnes, Huggins Set to Chase National Title

Arkansas Tech Fishing Club members Evan Barnes and Dustin Huggins have an opportunity to earn a title this week that would last a lifetime — national champions.

Arkansas Tech’s two-man team will be considered among the pre-tournament favorites when 43 collegiate fishing teams from across the United States convene on the Arkansas River in Little Rock for the 2011 College BASS National Championship.

The competition will begin at 5:45 a.m. on Thursday, July 7. Three days of fishing will determine a team national champion, which will be crowned during a weigh-in on Saturday, July 9.

Arkansas Tech enters the national championship tournament as the 2011 College BASS West Super Regional champion. Barnes (photographed, left) and Huggins (photographed, right) reeled in 31 pounds, 15 ounces worth of fish over the course of the two-day event at Lake Dardanelle in Russellville on Thursday, June 2, and Friday, June 3.

Other favorites for this week’s College BASS National Championship include the East Super Regional champions from the University of Mississippi, West Super Regional runner-up Texas A&M University and East Super Regional runner-up Auburn University-Montgomery.

Other schools represented in the 2011 College BASS National Championship field include the University of Alabama, the University of Arkansas, Auburn University, Boise State University, the University of Georgia, the University of Indiana, Louisiana State University, Mississippi State University, the University of Missouri, Oklahoma State University, Penn State University and the University of Tennessee.
