ATU Youth Wind Ensemble Performs Sunday

Witherspoon Hall 1000 Music Stories
Witherspoon Hall is home to the Arkansas Tech University Department of Music.

Fifty-seven high school and junior high band students representing 14 K-12 educational entities in Arkansas will take the stage at Arkansas Tech University’s Witherspoon Auditorium as the ATU Youth Wind Ensemble on Sunday, Nov. 5.

The concert, which will also include appearances by the ATU Symphonic Wind Ensemble, will begin at 2:30 p.m. at 407 West Q Street in Russellville. Admission will be free and open to the public.

Band students in grades 9-12 were eligible to audition for the ATU Youth Wind Ensemble at the outset of the fall 2023 semester. Those selected have participated in rehearsals throughout the semester in preparation for Sunday’s concert.

This is the first year of the ATU Youth Wind Ensemble program, which was developed by Dr. Daniel A. Belongia, ATU director of bands and professor of music, in collaboration with his colleagues in the ATU Department of Music and the ATU College of Arts and Humanities.

The youth ensemble will perform “On Parade” by Amanda Aldridge, “Blessed Are They” by Johannes Brahms and “Halcyon Hearts” by Katahj Copley.

The ATU Symphonic Wind Ensemble will play “Urban Light” by James M. David.

The concert finale will be a joint performance of Gustav Holst’s “First Suite in E Flat” by the ATU Youth Wind Ensemble and the ATU Symphonic Wind Ensemble.
