Sympatico Percussion Group will perform a concert at Arkansas Tech University on Wednesday, Jan. 22.
The performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Witherspoon Auditorium, 407 West Q Street in Russellville. Admission will be free and open to the public.
Formed in 2008, Sympatico Percussion Group consists of members Scott Herring, Joseph Krygier, Johnny Mendoza, Greg Beyer and Susan Powell. Their repertoire includes rudimental drumming, ragtime xylophone, pop transcriptions and original compositions.
“The group members draw from their many years of performing throughout North America and abroad with chamber ensembles, orchestras, military bands and as soloists, in addition to considerable cumulative pedagogical experience holding college professorships,” reads a portion of the ensemble’s bio.
The members of Sympatico Percussion Group have more than 75 years of college teaching experience at institutions such as Ohio State University, the University of South Carolina, Northern Illinois University and McMurry University.
The Jan. 22 concert will include a performance of an original composition by Powell. Multiple members of the ATU percussion studio will join Sympatico Percussion Group for the playing of that piece.
Sympatico Percussion Group will provide a clinic for ATU percussion students as part of its visit to Arkansas Tech.
“This concert is particularly important to me, because I studied with Scott Herring for my undergraduate degree at University of South Carolina,” said Dr. Cory Fica, ATU instructor of music. “I witnessed this group perform at USC in 2011, and it left a profound impact on me. I am incredibly grateful to have these master players and educators on our campus.”
