ATU Students Step Forward to Support Homeless Youth

SM Donations November 2022

Arkansas Tech University sociology students gathered and delivered more than 2,000 personal care items to benefit the Russellville School District homeless assistance program during the month of November.

The program was carried out under the auspices of the ATU chapter of Alpha Kappa Delta, the national honor society for sociology students.

“The donations are part of the larger adolescent resource education initiative,” said Dr. Jason Ulsperger, ATU professor of sociology and criminal justice and advisor for the Alpha Kappa Delta organization. “Students plan to concentrate future projects on historically underserved youth populations in the Arkansas River Valley.”

November is National Youth Homeless Awareness Month. As part of their efforts to increase understanding of homelessness among young people, ATU Alpha Kappa Delta members hosted guest speaker Skye Mitchell. An ATU alumna, Mitchell oversees the RSD homeless assistance program. She spoke to the ATU students about government funding and social service careers.
