Arkansas Tech No. 1 in National Preseason Poll

Arkansas Tech University is the preseason favorite to win the 2010-11 NCAA Division II women’s basketball national championship according to one publication.

Division II Bulletin, which has covered NCAA Division II basketball since 1991, has installed Arkansas Tech as the No. 1 team in its 2010-11 preseason women’s basketball poll.

The Golden Suns will return four starters from a team that finished 31-3 overall, earned a share of the Gulf South Conference West Division title, won the GSC Tournament championship and won the NCAA Division II South Region title in 2009-10.

The Golden Suns are quite familiar with the No. 2 team in the Division II Bulletin preseason poll.

Delta State, which lost to Arkansas Tech in the GSC Tournament final and the NCAA Division II South Region championship game last March, is ranked right behind Arkansas Tech in the preseason national poll. The Lady Statesmen were 27-4 last season.

Arkansas Tech and Delta State are scheduled to meet twice during the 2010-11 regular season — Jan. 22 in Cleveland, Miss., and Feb. 19 in Russellville.

Head coach Dave Wilbers and the Golden Suns will open practice on Oct. 15 and begin their season on Nov. 14 against St. Gregory’s University.
