Arkansas Tech Celebrates Black History Month

Arkansas Tech University will offer a month-long series of events to celebrate Black History Month 2015. The educational, cultural and social activities are a collaboration of several campus departments and organizations including the Division of Student Services, the Office of Leadership and Service, the Student Government Association, the Student Activities Board, the African American Student Association and SPECTRUM. The events planned to celebrate Black History Month at Arkansas Tech include:

Monday, Feb. 2 – Kick Off Celebration and Balloon Release
  • Event begins at 2 p.m., Hindsman Bell Tower
  • Official start of Black History Month at Arkansas Tech
  • Sponsored by the African American Student Association
Thursday, Feb. 5 – Tech Hall – #Blacklivesmatter
  • Event begins at 7 p.m., Room 138 of Rothwell Hall
  • Open discussion with audience involvement
  • Sponsored by the African American Student Association
Friday, Feb. 6 – Aids Awareness
  • Event begins at 7 p.m., Room 242 of the Doc Bryan Student Services Center
  • Program highlighting the impact the AIDS virus has on the community, state and nation
  • Sponsored by the African American Student Association
Monday, Feb. 9 – Speed Dating Program
  • Event begins at 6 p.m., Young Ballroom
  • Express your personality and meet new friends while finding your match
  • Sponsored by the African American Student Association and the Student Activities Board
Thursday, Feb. 12 – Action Day – Community Service
  • Event runs from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m., Doc Bryan Student Services Center Rotunda
  • Provide service to the Pope County Library
  • RSVP on theLink
  • Sponsored by the Office of Leadership and Service and the African American Student Association
Monday, Feb. 16 – Friday, Feb. 20 – Snapshot of Our Impact
  • Display discusses African Americans from Arkansas who have made and are making an impact
  • Sponsored by the Division of Student Services
Tuesday, Feb. 17 – Black History Month Keynote Address
  • Event begins at 7:30 p.m., Witherspoon Auditorium
  • Listen to Dr. Terrell Strayhorn, The Ohio State University, discuss diversity and other topics
  • Sponsored by the Division of Student Services
Thursday, Feb. 19  – Movie Night: Dear White People
  • Event begins at 7 p.m., Doc Bryan Lecture Hall
  • Movie focuses on racial identity in “post-racial” America
  • Sponsored by the African American Student Association and the Student Activities Board
Sunday, Feb. 22 – Soul Food Sunday Service
  • Event begins at 11 a.m., New Prospect Missionary Baptist Church
  • A religious service and meal provided for those attending
  • Sponsored by the African American Student Association
Monday, Feb. 23  – Open Mic Night
  • Event begins at 9 p.m., Baz-Tech
  • Participate with spoken word, music or poetry
  • Sponsored by the African American Student Association
Thursday, Feb. 26  – Gold Rush Basketball Games
  • Games begin at 5:30 p.m. & 7:30 p.m., Tucker Coliseum
  • Enjoy basketball and a special student section to watch the games
  • Sponsored by the Student Government Association, Student Activities Board and the African American Student Association
Friday, Feb. 27  – Casino Night
  • Event begins at 8 p.m., Young Ballroom
  • Take part in a casino event complete with food, games and fun
