Arka Tech and Nebo Win Statewide Awards

Members of the Arka Tech student newspaper staff and the Nebo literary magazine staff at Arkansas Tech University were rewarded for their efforts to inform and entertain the campus community during the 2011 Arkansas College Media Association Conference in Conway.

The Arka Tech won five awards. Josh Rhinehart won first place in sports column writing, while Travis Flower earned a first place award for cartoon strip.

Ashley Schurtz earned third place in sports photography. John Post was presented with an honorable mention award for review writing, and the Arka Tech staff was recognized with a third place award for best Internet edition.

Tommy Mumert, assistant professor of journalism, serves as staff advisor for the Arka Tech.

Katherine Williams captured two ACMA first place awards for her work on Nebo. She was recognized in the cover design and contents page design categories.

Dan Sklar and Yance Wyatt of Arkansas Tech were both recognized for their writing in Nebo. Sklar won second place in the poetry category, while Wyatt earned second place for fiction writing.

Dr. Michael Ritchie, professor of English and staff advisor for Nebo, said that copies of the award-winning literary magazine are available at the Department of English office in Witherspoon Hall Room 142. Cost is $5 for the general public and $2 for individuals with a valid Tech identification card.
