APEX Center Launch Party September 10

Student success services at Arkansas Tech University has a new identity.

The APEX Center, located in Doc Bryan Student Services Center room 153, will host a launch party from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 10.

Free T-shirts, free food and a drawing for a free Apple iPad will be part of the launch party.

Previously known as ATU Student Success Services, the APEX (Action Plan for Educational Excellence) Center offers academic coaching, group study sessions, standardized test assistance and tutoring in more than 50 courses.

“Data shows that ATU students who perform well practice the habits associated with the APEX Center,” said Dr. Elishia Fairfield, ATU director of student success services. “We place an emphasis on continuously evolving to meet the needs of our students. Our programs are designed to benefit every student. We are excited about the launch of our new name and hope that it encourages even more ATU students to be proactive in seeking academic coaching, tutoring and other student success resources.”

Tutoring hours for fall 2018 will be 4-8 p.m. each Sunday-Thursday in two locations: Doc Bryan room 153 and Ross Pendergraft Library and Technology Center room 129. In addition, the APEX Center will offer online tutoring on Blackboard during the fall 2018 semester.

Students may make tutoring appointments online at http://tutortrac.atu.edu.

Daytime tutoring in Doc Bryan room 153 brings biology, engineering, history and mathematics assistance to ATU students. Tutoring at other locations on campus caters to students in accounting, music theory, statistics, world languages and writing.

Students who want to take the next step and participate in academic coaching will be scheduled for weekly meetings with an APEX Center staff member.

“Tutoring is subject specific, whereas academic coaching is more about setting and pursuing goals,” said Fairfield. “In academic coaching, we discuss student performance in past classes, talk about strengths and areas for improvement and develop a customized study plan. We establish weekly action items, sign an agreement regarding those items and then review them the following week to ensure accountability.”
