Another Softball Split for Tech and SAU

The first-ever series between nationally-ranked Great American Conference softball teams resulted in a draw.

Nationally fifth-ranked Arkansas Tech University and nationally 23rd-ranked Southern Arkansas University split a doubleheader at the Chartwells Women’s Sports Complex in Russellville on Saturday. The series ended tied two games apiece.

The Golden Suns (38-5 overall, 28-4 GAC) will host Harding University for a GAC doubleheader at the Chartwells Women’s Sports Complex on Tuesday, April 12. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.

Game One: Tech 1, SAU 0

Jalissa Gum protected an early lead by pitching a two-hit shutout in a 1-0 Arkansas Tech victory over Southern Arkansas in Saturday’s first game.

Gum (15-1) struck out 10 Lady Muleriders as she extended her scoreless innings streak to 21 and two-thirds. She has recorded 34 strikeouts over her last three starts.

Destiny Crumpley drove in the only run of the game with a first-inning double down the right field line that drove in Alex Edinger.

SAU starter Kimmy Beasley (17-3) was charged with one run on four hits over six innings.

Game Two: SAU 3, Tech 1

Taylor Guin, Ashton Atwell and Tyler Casada drove in one run apiece to lead Southern Arkansas to a 3-1 win over Arkansas Tech in the series finale on Saturday.

Kaylee Garner (16-3) pitched a complete game for the Lady Muleriders, limiting the Golden Suns to one unearned run on five hits in seven innings.

Arkansas Tech’s Sydnee Clark (3-3) also went the distance in the circle. She was charged with three runs, one of which was earned, on five hits in seven innings.

Edinger scored the Suns’ lone run as the result of an SAU error in the bottom of the first inning.
