Wonder Boys Throttle ECU 14-4

A pair of big innings lifted the Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys to a 14-4 baseball victory over the East Central University Tigers in Great American Conference action at Tech Field in Russellville on Saturday.

The Wonder Boys (22-22 overall, 11-8 GAC) put together five-run rallies in the first and fifth innings on their way to a sixth consecutive conference win.

Arkansas Tech right-hander Aaron Luchterhand (5-5) struck out six ECU batters over six innings of work as he earned his third win in his last four starts.

Landon Sullins extended his hitting streak to 22 consecutive games — the longest by a Wonder Boy this year — by going 3-for-4 with four runs batted in.

Tech’s Madison Beaird was 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBIs and three runs scored. Jonathan Finnegan was 2-for-3 with four RBIs, Scott Sammons drove in a pair of runs and Chris Reese scored four runs for the Wonder Boys. Thomas Biocic added an RBI and scored twice.

ECU starting pitcher Jacob Gammons (2-3) took the loss. He allowed eight runs on nine hits in four innings.

Jeff Schmidt and Bryant Mistler had one RBI apiece for the Tigers (24-19, 8-10), who lost for the seventh time in their last 10 games.

The game was stopped early on the 10-run lead after seven innings mercy rule. Reese ended the game in the top of the seventh by snagging a Tyle Hankins line drive and stepping on second base to double off Mac Grace.

Arkansas Tech and East Central will conclude their series with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Sunday, April 22.

Both games can be heard on KCAB 980 AM.
