Homecoming 2011 is in the books at Arkansas Tech University, and the most relieved man on campus might be Student Government Association (SGA) President Roger Norman.
“Homecoming was a little stressful because the role of SGA during the event has not always been defined,” said Norman. “Everything has been passed down by tradition, so getting a handle on all of the small details that have to be taken care of was not very easy. Once Homecoming gets going it’s not as stressful because you just roll with what we’ve planned. It was good to see four or five months of work pay off.”
Norman (photographed during Homecoming, far right, with fellow SGA officer Derick McKinney and Vice President for Student Services and University Relatons Susie Nicholson) was elected SGA president by the Arkansas Tech student body last spring. He began preparing for the role over the summer, and he has found that one of the greatest challenges is taking the broad scope of SGA and focusing on specific goals.
“There is so much out there we can do and make better,” said Norman. “You have to prioritize and decide what will help the most students. We are definitely on the right path. We just have to continue to narrow our focus and make recommendations so that we can continue to improve our university and better serve our students.”
Norman said that his goals for the rest of the academic year include meeting with campus officials to plan Homecoming 2012 and promoting SGA on campus.
“Student Government Association has to become more fine-tuned to what students want,” said Norman. “We want the student body to make suggestions to our officers and senators. In order to do that, we have to make ourselves more known on campus.”
Norman will graduate from Arkansas Tech in May 2012. He plans on pursuing a doctoral degree in history while also seeking work as a musician. Like many college seniors, he’s not 100 percent sure what’s next.
“I’ve played the guitar and drums all my life, and I feel competent and confident in my musical abilities,” said Norman. “I’m definitely going to keep on playing music and pursue that as a living. I have a tendency to get too involved in a variety of activities. I need to figure out what I want out of life.”
