Suns Hold Off Lady Lions in Four Sets

Arkansas Tech rallied late in the fourth set on Friday night to put the Lindenwood University Lady Lions away and extend its home volleyball winning streak to 16 consecutive matches.

The Golden Suns’ 3-1 victory came in their only match on day one of the 2011 LaQuinta Inn and Suites Arkansas Tech Invitational at Tucker Coliseum in Russellville.

The Suns (24-3) will face Sioux Falls at 11 a.m. and Truman State at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 15, during the second and final day of the event. No admission will be charged.

Arkansas Tech won the first two sets with ease (25-14 and 25-17), but Lindenwood made it a match by taking the third set 25-20.

The Lady Lions led 27-26 in the fourth set and had a chance to force a decisive fifth set before a Lindenwood service error tied the score at 27-27.

A Lady Lion attack error gave Arkansas Tech a 28-27 lead, and Thabata Galvao recorded the knockout blow for the Golden Suns with a kill to give Tech a 29-27 fourth-set win.

Laura Farney (photographed) notched her seventh double-double of the season for the Golden Suns with 15 kills and 13 digs. Tech’s Brittany Ryan added 11 kills and six blocks, while Sara Motsinger registered 10 kills.

Kelly O’Malley made nine kills and four blocks, Amber Cerrillos had 42 assists, eight digs and six kills and Brennae Benda contributed a match-high 29 digs for the Golden Suns. Taylor Brown chipped in 14 digs. Marcela Mascarenhas had three service aces.

Kelsey Kennedy had 13 kills and Erin Anselman made 11 kills for Lindenwood (14-11).
