Denzer Earns GAC Special Teams POW Award

Arkansas Tech’s Jake Denzer is the Great American Conference special teams player of the week for the period ending Saturday, Sept. 10.

Denzer, a senior from Elkins, punted six times for an average of 41 yards per attempt during the Wonder Boys’ 31-20 win at Southwest Baptist on Saturday.

His 72-yard punt with 4:17 remaining in the first quarter marked the first time in more than four years that an Arkansas Tech player had recorded a punt of 70 or more yards. Michael Podobnik had a 75-yard punt against Northeastern State (Okla.) on Aug. 30, 2007.

Two of Denzer’s punts at Southwest Baptist were downed inside the Bearcats’ 20-yard line.

Denzer is the first Arkansas Tech football player to ever earn a GAC player of the week award. The Great American Conference, a new NCAA Division II league comprised of nine charter member institutions in Arkansas and Oklahoma, is in its first season of competition in 2011-12.
