The Arkansas Tech Office of Student Support Services (SSS) is settling in a new office space in Bryan Hall.
A larger space was needed to accommodate the needs of approximately 150 students who participate in the program.
The new office space provides SSS better space for tutoring, meetings with students, conducting workshops for students and group studying.
Last fall, Arkansas Tech University received a Student Support Services grant from the U.S. Department of Education.
The program falls under the umbrella of TRiO, an initiative enacted by the federal government in 1965 to overcome class, social and cultural barriers to higher education and is designed to assist students who need additional support in order to graduate.
Students eligible to apply for the program include those who are first-generation college students from low-income families and current students who have disabilities evidencing academic need.
Jaime Martin serves as program director and she says students enrolled in the program have access to academic tutoring, financial literacy programming, academic advice and assistance and information regarding graduate opportunities.
Martin says the program provides a personalized approach when working with students. She adds, “The program will be tailored to meet the needs of each student. We’ll have the opportunity to speak with the students to determine their needs, and we will be able to develop an individualized plan for each student to address areas where they may need additional support.”
As the fall semester will soon begin, Martin advises all college students seeking success to go to class, meet and talk with professors and take advantage of all the resources available on campus.
Additionally, she encourages students to get involved on campus, while keeping a balance in scheduling, and to not be afraid to ask for help.
