Telling the Story of “Characters” Through Music

Witherspoon Hall is home to the Arkansas Tech University College of Arts and Humanities.

The Arkansas Tech University Concert Band and the ATU Symphonic Band will present a concert entitled “Characters” on Thursday, March 12.

The performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Witherspoon Auditorium, 407 West Q Street in Russellville. Admission will be free and open to the public.

Dr. Adam P. Miller, ATU assistant professor of music and associate director of bands, serves as conductor for the ATU Concert Band and the ATU Symphonic Band.

The ATU Concert Band will play “Dedication Fanfare” by Carol Brittin Chambers, “A Childhood Hymn” by David Holsinger and “Portrait of a Clown” by Frank Ticheli.

Sydney Stalnaker of Ola will serve as student conductor on the Chambers piece, while Taylor Jacobs of Mount Ida will serve as student conductor on the Ticheli composition.

The ATU Symphonic Band will perform “Let Me Be Frank With You” by John Mackey, “Lux Aurumque” by Eric Whitacre, “Concerto for Tuba and Wind Ensemble” by Gary D. Zick and “On the Mall” by Edwin Franko Goldman.

Dr. Daniel A. Belongia, ATU professor of music and director of bands, will appear as guest conductor on the Whitacre composition. Samuel Revis, ATU visiting lecturer of music, will perform on tuba during the Zick piece.

The ATU Concert Band is a large ensemble dedicated to the non-music major population. The band performs two concerts per year. ATU Concert Band is open to all students in the university without a required audition.

The ATU Symphonic Band is comprised primarily of music majors, but is open to students of all majors by audition. It offers two performances per semester.
