Arkansas Tech University will reach the midpoint of its 2024-25 Great American Conference basketball schedule this week.

For the Wonder Boys (7-9 overall, 4-6 GAC), the recent emergence of senior guard Carlos Ramsey has bolstered their prospects for the month of February and beyond.

A transfer from the University of Hawaii-Hilo, Ramsey averaged 16.7 points per game for the Vulcans over the past two seasons.

He is starting to find his place in the Arkansas Tech offense after joining the roster at the beginning of the spring 2025 semester. Ramsey has averaged 13 points per game over the last three contests, and perhaps even more importantly, he dished out a season-high five assists in the Wonder Boys’ 76-64 win at Southeastern Oklahoma State University on Saturday.

“(Ramsey) is buying into sharing the basketball,” said Mark Downey, ATU head men’s basketball coach. “He’s really skilled with the ball in his hands. He’s a little rough around the edges and he likes to talk a little bit, but quite honestly this team probably needed that. We’re just trying to work toward early March by getting better every day. When we do things the right way and play the right way, this team has a chance to be pretty good. It could be fun.”

Arkansas Tech will visit Harding University for a doubleheader at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 23, in Searcy before traveling to the University of Arkansas-Monticello for a 1 and 3 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, Jan. 25.

Live coverage of all four games will be provided by KCJC 102.3 FM, the EAB Media Group app and www.arkansastechsports.com.

The Arkansas Tech Golden Suns (3-11, 1-9) are in the throes of an eight-game losing streak, which matches the longest in program history. Arkansas Tech’s women are struggling on the offensive end. They have failed to reach 60 points in each of their last six games.

There was, however, a glimpse of the Golden Suns’ potential on Saturday when they held a 34-33 halftime lead at Southeastern Oklahoma State. Then the Savage Storm made 21-of-21 free throws in the second half to pull away for a 77-58 victory.

“We gave them those opportunities at the free throw line in the second half,” said Brad Palmer, ATU women’s basketball associate head coach, who filled in for head coach Dave Wilbers during last week’s Oklahoma road trip while Wilbers was out with a back injury. “The way we guarded in the first half…we got away from that a little bit. We weren’t moving our feet. There’s no quit in our team and our effort is good. I love these kids. They are a joy to be around.”
