Samurai Performance at Arkansas Tech April 2

Actor, comedian and Samurai martial artist Yoshi Amao will perform at Arkansas Tech University on Thursday, April 2.

The performance will begin at 3 p.m. in Ross Pendergraft Library and Technology Center room 300B, 305 West Q Street in Russellville. Admission will be free and open to the public due to a sponsorship from the ATU Miller Center for Global Engagement.

Born in Osaka, Japan, and based in New York City since 1990, Amao played the role of Sera in FX’s “Shogun.” The show has won 19 Emmy awards, including best drama.

A regular performer on stage and screen, Amao has appeared in 14 films and on television shows such as “Mr. Robot” on USA, “Blacklist” on NBC and “Billions” on Showtime. He has made appearances on NBC’s “Today”, “Saturday Night Live,” “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” and “Late Night with Conan O’Brien.”

Amao has hosted multiple variety and game shows that have been broadcast in the United States, Europe and South America, including “Japanizi Going Going Gong” on Disney XD and “Big in Japan,” which aired in Portugal, Greece, Sweden and Denmark.

A student of Japanese sword fighting teacher Tahei Waki, Amao founded the Samurai Sword Soul theatre company in 2003.

Those attending the April 2 performance are invited to remain in Pendergraft Library room 300B for the ATU Office of International Education International Coffee Hour event that will begin at 4 p.m. that afternoon. Japan will be the featured country during the coffee hour.
