Two Arkansas Tech University faculty members and one ATU student were part of a delegation from Arkansas that traveled to Washington, D.C., in February to advocate for the continuation of Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) funding.
Pete Kelly and Troy Norton, ATU senior instructors of physical education, were joined on the trip by ATU student Taylor Darling of Nashville. They visited with U.S. Congressman French Hill, U.S. Congressman Bruce Westerman, U.S. Senator John Boozman and U.S. Senator Tom Cotton about ESSA funding and the role it plays in supporting health and physical education.
Kelly, Norton and Darling represented SHAPE Arkansas, a professional society for health and physical educators. Kelly serves on the organization’s board, while Norton is the organization’s president elect.
According to information provided by SHAPE, ESSA funding “provides increased access to funds for health and physical education programs (including professional development) and allows states and school districts to set their own priorities for funding and accountability.”
