ATU’s Morris Honored for Highland Darter Research

Arkansas Tech University senior Colton Morris of Mountainburg earned regional acclaim for his research during the 2023 Southeastern Fishes Council meeting.

Morris earned third place in the Suttkus Best Student Poster Presentation. His presentation was entitled “Microhabitat use of the Highland Darter (Etheostoma teddyroosevelt) in the Illinois Bayou watershed of Arkansas.”

The competition honors Royal Suttkus, a founding member of Southeastern Fishes Council and professor and curator of fishes at the Tulane University.

A fisheries and wildlife science major, Morris is completing his research into the highland darter as part of the ATU undergraduate research grants program under the direction of Dr. Kyler Hecke, ATU assistant professor of fisheries science in the ATU Department of Biological Sciences.
