Dr. Delton Gordon, Arkansas Tech University associate dean for residence life, has been elected president of the Southwest Association of College and University Housing Officers (SWACUHO).
Gordon will serve as president elect during the 2023-24 academic year, president in 2024-25 and past president in 2025-26.
According to its website, the mission of SWACUHO is to support a “diverse, inclusive and successful membership by providing opportunities to connect, engage and grow in the housing profession.”
Gordon received his bachelor’s degree at Oklahoma State University before earning a master’s degree in counseling and student personnel at Emporia State University and his Doctor of Philosophy degree in leadership from Carolina University.
He began his career at Kansas State University-Salina (now Kansas State University Polytechnic Campus), where he oversaw residence halls, campus recreation, leadership programs, fraternity and sorority life and student government during a six-year stint.
After serving as director of student leadership at Tarleton State University, he returned to Oklahoma State as an area coordinator in residence life in 2008.
Gordon progressed to assistant director for residence life in Stillwater, a role that included oversight of 3,000 beds, academic initiatives, leadership programs, residential curriculum and assessment for OSU’s student housing operation before he was hired to lead the residence life program at Arkansas Tech in 2018.
Over the past five years, Gordon has led an overhaul of the ATU Department of Residence Life’s methods of communicating with and marketing to current and prospective residents and restructured the student staff to increase flexibility and meet the evolving needs of students.
Gordon develops, administers and manages a $10 million annual budget as part of ATU’s 2,600-bed residential housing program and its full-time, graduate assistant and student staff.
