Arkansas Tech University behavioral sciences students continued their community outreach efforts through Project IMPACT by delivering care packages to residents at a local assisted living facility as part of the initiative’s Pathways to Care program.

The service project, entitled “Safety, Socks and Sugar-Free,” was organized by Alpha Kappa Delta (sociology honor society), Alpha Phi Sigma (criminal justice honor society) and their advisor, Dr. Jason Ulsperger. The effort focused on promoting health, safety and social well-being among older adults living in elder care facilities across the Arkansas River Valley.

Students assembled and delivered 25 care packages totaling more than 300 items, including grip socks to help prevent falls, sugar-free candy, magnifying glasses to assist with reading labels, puzzles and other comfort items. Educational materials were also included, addressing fall prevention, medication awareness, personal safety and the mental health benefits of social interaction.

The delivery took place during a root beer float social hosted by Brookdale Senior Living, allowing students to spend time interacting with residents beyond the distribution of materials. Door prizes, including Arkansas Tech University shirts and steel water bottles, were also provided.

In a related outreach effort, ATU student Bridget May delivered Valentine’s Day cards to residents at Legacy Heights Nursing Home to extend Project IMPACT’s focus on reducing isolation and promoting emotional well-being among older adults.
