Arkansas Tech University formally welcomed its Class of 2023 during a pair of freshman convocation ceremonies at John E. Tucker Coliseum in Russellville on Saturday, Aug. 17.
The incoming ATU students participated in a Tech tradition during the ceremony by putting on their academic gowns, a symbol of their transition to college student status and their goal of returning to Tucker Coliseum in 2023 to receive their degrees.
This marked the sixth consecutive year that Arkansas Tech has hosted freshman convocation.
“The word convocation from Latin means calling together,” said Dr. Barbara J. Johnson, ATU vice president for academic affairs. “It is fitting that we are gathered here together with a common purpose of seeking knowledge, serving others and finding our calling together. Many of you here may already know your calling and the purposes for which you want to dedicate your life’s work. Others may be searching. Regardless of where you are on your path, the faculty, staff, administrators and trustees are here to honor the start of your academic, professional and personal journey.”
Arkansas Tech University is beginning its 110th academic year. Freshmen will continue with their Tech Connect orientation program through Tuesday, Aug. 20.
The first day of class for the fall 2019 semester at ATU is scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 21.
“Arkansas Tech’s history is built upon educational opportunity,” said Dr. Robin E. Bowen, ATU president. “It is built upon professionalism and integrity. It is built upon grit. Grit is the passion and perseverance to overcome any and all obstacles that stand between you as a student and your academic goals. Research now shows us that your brain operates much like a muscle. The harder and more you work it, the stronger it becomes. Remember this, because the ultimate goal for each of you is to return to this very building and receive your degree on commencement day.”
