Arkansas Tech University nursing students and faculty observed Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in September with a pair of projects that raised funds and awareness.

The ATU Student Nurses Association led a bake sale at Hindsman Tower on Sept. 17 that raised $629.50. Proceeds were split between the Dr. Susan Self Memorial Scholarship and the Korey Heath Memorial Scholarship, both of which are awarded to nursing students who plan to pursue careers as oncology specialists.

An additional $1,200 was raised as a result of directed donations to the Dr. Susan Self Memorial Scholarship.

Dr. Karmen Goodner served as faculty advisor for the bake sale. Additional members of the ATU Department of Nursing faculty provided baked goods and volunteered their time during the event.

The ATU Student Nurses Association created awareness of childhood cancer with a “Go Gold!” promotional event in conjunction with the Arkansas Tech home volleyball match on Sept. 25. ATU nursing students handed out free bracelets, bookmarks, pens and ribbons to the fans in attendance at Tucker Coliseum.

The “Go Gold!” promotion also included recognition of 8-year old Knox Bryant, who was diagnosed with B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia in November 2024. Knox participated in a ceremonial first serve with Golden Suns volleyball players Henley Hooks and Savannah Meyers.

Goodner and Dr. Shaana Escobar served as ATU Department of Nursing faculty advisors for the Sept. 25 event at Tucker Coliseum. Additional support was provided by Dr. Jeremy Schwehm of the ATU School of Professional and Community Education (PACE) and Melissa South and Ashley Bryant of the ATU Division of Advancement.
