The Arkansas Tech University Department of History and Political Science will host a Constitution Day 2026 observance on Mullens Plaza at Ferguson Student Union on Thursday, Sept. 17.
Members of the ATU community and local dignitaries will participate in a reading of the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights beginning at noon. Attendance will be free and open to the public.
ATU students, faculty or staff who wish to participate in the reading are asked to contact Dr. Christopher Housenick, ATU associate professor of political science, at chousenick@atu.edu.
In addition, members of the ATU community will teach students in the Russellville School District about the U.S. Constitution during the day on Thursday, Sept. 17. Those interested in assisting with that effort are asked to contact Dr. Michael Rogers, ATU professor of political science, at mrogers6@atu.edu.
Each constitution reader and each constitution teacher will receive a free ATU Constitution Day T-shirt.
The U.S. Constitution was adopted by the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, Pa., on Sept. 17, 1787.
In 2004, Sen. Robert Byrd of West Virginia championed a new law that designated Sept. 17 of each year as Constitution Day. Public schools and institutions of higher learning across the United States are required to provide educational programs about the document on Constitution Day.
