Future Math Teachers Learn From Current Practitioner

Jon Sumners, mathematics teacher at Dover High School, spoke to Arkansas Tech University students on Monday, Sept. 8.

Jon Sumners, who is in his 10th year as a mathematics teacher at Dover High School, visited Terre Taylor’s Special Methods of Mathematics class at Arkansas Tech University’s Corley Hall on Monday, Sept. 8.

Sumners serves as a math interventionist and AP Precalculus teacher. He also teaches concurrent ATU classes in College Algebra and Plane Trigonometry at Dover High School.

While speaking to the ATU students, Mr. Sumners shared the path he took to earn a teaching job in math and provided advice on developing lesson plans. He emphasized the value of professional learning communities, which bring teachers together to ensure that class content is consistent and building toward standards attainment.
