Washington’s Big Night Lifts SAU Over Wonder Boys

Southern Arkansas University running back Kor’Davion Washington carried 19 times for 154 yards and two touchdowns Saturday night to lead the Muleriders to a 35-14 Great American Conference win over Arkansas Tech University at Thone Stadium at Buerkle Field in Russellville.

Washington’s 6-yard touchdown run with 6:17 left in the fourth quarter broke a 14-14 tie.

A pair of late turnovers by Arkansas Tech allowed the Muleriders to tack on an O.B. Jones 3-yard touchdown run and an 11-yard touchdown run by Washington which, combined with Austin Wilkerson point after touchdown kicks, set the final margin.

Southern Arkansas (3-1) finished with 287 rushing yards. SirCharles Perkins added 17 carries for 85 yards and a touchdown and Jones had seven carries for 42 yards and two touchdowns.

Wallace Foote carried 16 times for a career-high 121 yards for the Wonder Boys (0-4). He had a 1-yard touchdown run with 11:33 remaining in the fourth quarter that allowed Arkansas Tech to forge a 14-14 tie.

The Muleriders responded with a 10-play, 63-yard scoring drive that consumed more than five minutes and led to Washington’s go-ahead touchdown.

Christian Cole also had a rushing touchdown for the Wonder Boys. ATU quarterback Mason Cunningham saw his first action of the season and completed 14-of-26 passes for 130 yards.

Alex Chambers recorded a career-high 13 tackles for the Wonder Boys’ defense.

Arkansas Tech will host Oklahoma Baptist University for a 6 p.m. GAC contest at Thone Stadium at Buerkle Field on Saturday, Oct. 5. It will be Homecoming at ATU.
