Friends We’ll Miss – Spring 2019

Bernice Villines Martin (’34) died on June 19, 2018. She worked at Clark and Eoff Furniture Store and Guys and Dolls Children’s Wear. Bernice lived in Harrison. She was 105.

Mildred Irene Brown Churchill (’36) died on Jan. 23, 2018. She taught in the public schools at New Hope and Bethel Chapel. Mildred lived in Camden. She was 101.

E.C. Freeman (’41) died on March 1, 2019. He flew 44 combat missions during World War II and was awarded the Air Medal and a Presidential Unit Citation. Upon returning from the war, he opened a grocery store and later built a furniture and appliance business that operated for more than 40 years. E.C. lived in Dumas. He was 98.

Kenneth Lucas (’42) died on Jan. 31, 2019. Kenneth served in the U.S. Army during World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He retired at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and went on to work in construction, as a cattleman and as a teacher of agriculture to veterans. Kenneth lived in North Little Rock. He was 96.

Van Anderson Rochelle Moores Jr. (’42) died on March 20, 2019. Van served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He joined his father in the family business, The New Store in Russellville, after the war and later owned and operated Shinn Funeral Service. He was inducted into the ATU Hall of Distinction in 1990. Van lived in Little Rock. He was 94.

Clarence Calvin Bowling (AGBU ’48) died on Sept. 15, 2018. Clarence served in the U.S. Army. He worked as an entomologist with the Texas A&M University system in Beaumont, Texas, and later began a crop consulting business. Clarence lived in Salem. He was 91.

William Ray Medley (MUED ’48 & FMR FACULTY) died on July 21, 2018. Bill served in the U.S. Army. He and his wife, Pat, played more than 1,000 concerts in 47 states and seven Canadian provinces. They taught at Arkansas Tech, Parsons College (Iowa) and Mount Mercy University (Iowa). Their piano method, “The Medley Way,” was published by Hal Leonard Publishing Company in 1981, and they retired from college teaching in 1992. Bill and Pat were inducted into the Arkansas Tech Hall of Distinction in 1967. Bill lived in Fayetteville. He was 91.

Jimmie B. Dyer (ECED ’49) died on Nov. 12, 2018. Jimmie served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. His career in education spanned more than 30 years and culminated with him retiring as assistant superintendent for the North Little Rock School District in 1983. He worked for another 20 years as a farmer and cattleman. Jimmie lived in Little Rock. He was 97.

Cecil L. Malone (BUAD ’49) died on June 30, 2018. He worked as unemployment insurance director at the Arkansas Employment Security Division. Cecil lived in Little Rock. He was 93.Barbara Ann McIntosh (’49) died on Oct. 17, 2018. She taught in the public schools of Winslow, Ariz., and Russellville. Barbara lived in Springdale. She was 87.

Dr. Leighton Millard (’50) died on July 5, 2018. He was a partner at Little Rock Orthopedic Clinic. Leighton lived in Hot Springs. He was 87. Ancil Skaggs (’50) died on Nov. 22, 2018. Ancil served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. The majority of his career was invested as a shift foreman for Chevron Oil. Ancil lived in Los Angeles, Calif. He was 91.

Paul “Pop” Crow (’51) died on July 14, 2018. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and was an accountant for Reynolds Metal Company. Pop lived in Midway. He was 87.

Alton Carroll Owens Jr. (BUS ’51) died on Nov. 24, 2018. Al served in the Arkansas National Guard. He formed Benton and Owens Insurance in Little Rock in 1962 and retired in 1981. Al lived in Little Rock. He was 87.

Vaughn Jackson Bone (’52) died on Aug. 2, 2018. Jack served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He owned and operated Jack Bone Appliances for 13 years and Dunkin Donuts for 38 years, both in Austin, Texas, before retiring in 2008. Jack lived in Austin, Texas. He was 88.

Robert E. Briley (’53) died on Jan. 20, 2019. Bob was a veteran of World War II. He later joined the Little Rock Fire Department and retired in 1978. Bob lived in North Little Rock. He was 90.

Dr. Cecil Clyde Haywood (ECED ’53) died on Oct. 27, 2018. Cecil served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He retired from the University of Arkansas at Monticello as dean of education in 1993. Cecil lived in Monticello. He was 90.

Joe Evans Cassady (MUS ’54) died on Dec. 9, 2018. Joe served in the U.S. Army. His civilian career included work as a band director and owner of a piano tuning service. Joe lived in Pine Bluff. He was 85.

Dr. Robert Charles Wolf (HPE ’54) died on Aug. 20, 2018. Bob served in the U.S. Army. His career in education culminated in 16 years of service as assistant superintendent of secondary education in the Joplin School District (Mo.). He was also a cattle rancher. Bob lived in Oronogo, Mo. He was 85.

Charles Eugene Baker (’55) died Dec. 17, 2018. Charles served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. His career as a geophysicist included assignments with Exxon in south Texas, Australia and Midland, Texas, before his retirement in 1985. Charles lived in Midland, Texas. He was 87.

James William “Jay” Hefner (’55) died on July 17, 2018. Jay lived in Russellville. He was 83.

Donald Arnold Reed (’55) died on Oct. 29, 2018. Donald served in the U.S. Army. His civilian career included work with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and ownership of Reed’s IGA Foodliner in Pine Bluff. Donald lived in Pine Bluff. He was 82.

Dr. William J. Stanley (HPE ’55) died on May 23, 2018. He was an educator. William lived in Temple, Texas. He was 87.

Joseph Edward Kolb (BUAD ’56) died on April 2, 2018. He served in the U.S. Army in Korea and was a project accountant for Weyerhaeuser. Joseph lived in Greens Chapel. He was 85.

Juanita W. Sutterfield (ELED ’57 & M.Ed. ELED ’81) died on June 28, 2018. She taught in the Russellville School District for 32 years. Juanita lived in Russellville. She was 89.

Edna Mae Preston Porter (’58) died on Nov. 4, 2018. She taught in the Springdale School District for 23 years. Edna lived in Springdale. She was 80.

Bennie Lee Docekal (ENGL EDU ’59) died Dec. 17, 2018. He invested his career in education, including service as superintendent for the Pottsville School District. Bennie lived in Pottsville. He was 87.

Ann Gibbs (ELED ’59) died on Oct. 20, 2018. She taught school and piano. Ann lived in Tulsa, Okla. She was 81.

Dr. Lynn Hatfield (’59) died on Oct. 11, 2018. He was a member of the faculty in the physics department at Texas Tech University. Lynn lived in Baton Rouge, La. He was 81.

Dr. Perry Dewitt Hope (MUED ’59) died on Jan. 30, 2019. Perry served three tours of duty in Vietnam with the U.S. Army Reserve Infantry. His career in education included work as a teacher, choir director, band director, school superintendent and educational cooperative director.Perry lived in Jonesboro. He was 82.

Bobby Banks (’60) died on Dec. 4, 2018. He served in the U.S. Air Force and worked with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for 30 years. Bobby lived in Russellville. He was 84.

Muriel Dean Stout Blalock (’60 & M.Ed. ’85) died on Nov. 6, 2018. She was a teacher. Muriel lived in Plainview. She was 83.

Dr. Nicholas C. Nahas (’60) died on Nov. 3, 2018. He served in the U.S. Army Chemical Corps and worked as a research scientist and manager for Exxon Mobil for more than 30 years. Nicholas lived in Oak Hill, N.Y. He was 77.

Calvin Bernard Moore (HPE ’61) died on Jan. 22, 2019. He was a U.S. Army Airborne paratrooper and had a 30-year career in human resources with DuPont/Conoco. Calvin lived in Hot Springs. He was 79.

Tom R. Salmon (’61) died on Sept. 16, 2018. He worked in the family trucking company, Pat Salmon and Sons. Tom lived in Jacksonville. He was 78.

John H. “Sonny” Burgess (’62) died on Feb. 8, 2019. He was a farmer and owner of a trucking company. Sonny lived in Lonoke. He was 76.

Kenneth E. Lambert (’62) died on July 24, 2018. He served in the U.S. Navy. Ken lived in Hot Springs. He was 78.

Bobby Rankin Sr. (’62) died on June 11, 2018. He was a retired colonel in the U.S. Air Force. Bobby lived in Nixa, Mo. He was 79.

Donald Rex Gray (’63) died on Nov. 12, 2018. He served in the U.S. Army and taught art and business during a 31-year career at Fife High School (Wash.). Don lived in Tacoma, Wash. He was 77.

Ronald Lee Twyford (’63) died on Nov. 10, 2018. His banking career included assisting in the creation of Alliance Bank. He retired from Simmons Bank of Hot Springs in 2007. Ronnie lived in Hot Springs. He was 75.

Larry Hunter (POL SCI ’64) died on Feb. 3, 2019. He gave 30 years of service to the Bergman School District in the capacities of basketball coach, bus driver, teacher and principal. Larry lived in Lead Hill. He was 80.

James Ira Sparks (MATH ’64) died on Sept. 4, 2018. He taught at the University of Memphis andEast Central High School in Tulsa, Okla. James lived in Tulsa, Okla. He was 75.

Bobby G. Rush (ACCT ’65) died on July 26, 2018. Bobby served in the U.S. Army for 22 years and retired at the rank of major. He retired from the service in 1985 and became vice president of finance and facilities at Colorado Christian University. Bobby lived in Russellville. He was 76.

Freda Louise Daum Massey (ELED ’67) died on Nov. 24, 2018. She was an elementary school teacher and retired in 1985 following a career that spanned more than 30 years, the majority of which was invested teaching first and second grade in the Mountain View School District. Freda lived in Paragould. She was 84.

Richard “Bubba” Payton (HPE ’67) died on July 4, 2018. He coached at Osceola, Manila and Lakeside before accepting a position at Lake Hamilton in 1978. He became the director of athletics there in 1985 and remained in that position until his retirement in 2007. He was inducted into the Arkansas High School Athletic Administrators Association Hall of Fame in 2009. Bubba lived in Hot Springs. He was 72.

Judith Ramey Sharp (ELED ’67) died on Oct. 31, 2018. Judi taught students ranging from the elementary to adult levels. She later worked as a computer programmer for the Internal Revenue Service in Washington, D.C. Judi lived in Mountain Home. She was 72.

Wilma Smith (’67) died on Aug. 21, 2018. She taught at Westview Elementary in the Excelsior Springs School District (Mo.) for 26 years. Wilma lived in Excelsior Springs, Mo. She was 73.

Mary Margaret “Peggy” Antrim (HPE ’68) died on June 16, 2018. She taught elementary physical education at Woodridge Elementary School in San Antonio, Texas, for 30 years. Peggy lived in San Antonio, Texas. She was 73.

Loyd Dodson Jr. (’68) died on July 18, 2018. Loyd coached basketball and taught in the Mt. Judea School District for 12 years. He and his wife, Kathy, owned and operated Pants West Clothing Store in Harrison for 25 years. Loyd lived in Harrison. He was 75.

Albert Edward Pillow (’68) died on Nov. 22, 2018. He served in the U.S. Army Reserve and was retired auditor for the State of Arkansas. Eddie lived in Harrison. He was 72.

William Porter England Jr. (’69) died on Aug. 27, 2018. Bill served in the U.S. Navy. His civilian career in the oil and gas industry included time with Tenneco Oil and Gas, Hadson Petroleum, Crosstimbers and XTO Energy. Bill lived in Oklahoma City, Okla. He was 70.

Jasper Dean Herren III (’69) died on July 17, 2018. He was a computer programmer and program analyst for Weatherford International. Jasper lived in McGehee. He was 70.

Bill Gene Burge (MATH/POL SCI ’70) died on Dec. 24, 2018. He was a lifelong math teacher, coach and farmer. Bill lived in Harrison. He was 71.

Miriam O’Quinn Pyatt (BUAD ’70) died on Dec. 19, 2018. She taught English in the Pottsville School District. Miriam lived in Russellville. She was 71.

Earl Campbell Cross (ELED ’71) died on Dec. 20, 2018. Earl began his career in education, teaching in the Barton-Lexa School District and the Magazine School District before becoming principal at Pottsville Elementary School. He also worked as a draftsman for General Dynamics and contributed to the NASA space shuttle program as well as the U.S. Air Force F-16 change program. Earl lived in Russellville. He was 72.

John “Jack” Patrick Kelleher (BIOL ’71) died on Dec. 7, 2018. He invested his career in the health care sector, beginning with pharmaceutical company Hoffman-La Roche and later serving as regional sales manager for Agfa. Jack lived in Vancouver, Wash. He was 71.

Barbara Ruth Nievar Pierce (ELED ’71) died on Sept. 16, 2018. She was a schoolteacher, ordained minister and advocate for children. Barbara lived in Del City, Okla. She was 84.

Jimmy Darrell Young (BUAD ’71) died on May 3, 2018. He worked at J.B. Hunt for 26 years and was a terminal manager at the time of his retirement. Jimmy lived in Edgemont. He was 75.

Donald Whitfield Peters (MATH ’72) died on June 19, 2018. He worked in the forecast and planning department for Arkansas Power and Light, and later Entergy, for more than 40 years. Don lived in Jacksonville. He was 68.

William Loyce Landers (RPA ’73) died on Dec. 7, 2018. He served as general manager for large truck stops and was self-employed with a lawn care and landscape business. Bill lived in Conway. He was 70.

Thomas Hoyle Sallis (MED TECH ’73) died on Aug. 10, 2018. He worked at Sparks Regional Medical Center in Fort Smith for 43 years and retired as director of information technology in 2015. Thomas lived in Fort Smith. He was 69.

Charlotte Campbell Haynes (PHYS SCI ’74) died on May 17, 2018. Charlotte lived in Judsonia. She was 66.

Dr. Tery Baskin (BIOL ’75) died on March 8, 2019. Tery owned pharmacies and RxResults. He was inducted into the Arkansas Tech Hall of Distinction in 2016. Tery lived in Little Rock. He was 65.

Al Frazier (’75) died on July 6, 2018. He was the founder of Arkansas Restoration Services. Al lived in Russellville. He was 67.

Nina Marie Jones (ELED ’76 & M.Ed. ELED ’82) died on June 12, 2018. She taught in the Paris School District for 24 years. Nina lived in Little Rock. She was 63.

Lucy White (SEC SCI ’77) died on Aug. 14, 2018. She had worked at the Arkansas Department of Motor Vehicles revenue office, the Arkansas Child Support Enforcement Agency and Tyson Foods. Lucy lived in Pottsville. She was 61.

Sandra Lee Kremp (NURS ’78) died on July 16, 2018. She worked at Millard-Henry Clinic for 23 years and owned VSPA MedSpa for 14 years. Sandy lived in Russellville. She was 65.

Frank “Ben” Clements Jr. (HIST/POL SCI ’80) died on July 5, 2018. He retired from the U.S. Air Force at the rank of Captain. Ben lived in Morrilton. He was 71.

Frederick Perry Beyer (AGBU ’81) died on Jan. 8, 2019. He served in the U.S. Navy for 21 years. Fred lived in Belleville. He was 82.

Jana Lynne Moore Crouch (BUAD ’81) died on Oct. 22, 2018. She was a professional seamstress. Jana lived in Russellville. She was 59.

Casimir “Casey” J. Crawley (ENGR ’83) died on Oct. 1, 2018. He worked for UTC Carrier. Casey lived in Carmel, Ind. He was 58.

Linda S. Steuber (’83) died on Feb. 17, 2018. She was a nurse at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center for 35 years. Linda lived in London. She was 73.

Randall Dean Sommers (’84) died on Dec. 18, 2018. Randall lived in Atkins. He was 56.

David Henderson (COM SCI ’85) died on Dec. 7, 2018. He had most recently worked for Quik Trip Corporation as a data architect. David lived in Tulsa, Okla. He was 55.

Dr. Benny Jay Kriesel (BIOL ’85) died on Nov. 23, 2018. He worked as a family practice physician in Russellville for 18 years. Benny lived in Russellville. He was 55.

Maureen McAllister (JOUR ’85) died on July 17, 2018. Maureen lived in Dardanelle. She was 54.

Curtis Hayden Partin (AGBU ’85) died on July 24, 2018. He founded and operated P&T Farms in Gum Springs. Curt lived in Dardanelle. He was 55.

Harlene Alice Zimdars Rayburn (HIST EDU ’87) died on Nov. 15, 2018. Harlene lived in Dardanelle. She was 67.

Gary Lynn Stobaugh (HIST/POL SCI ’87) died on July 11, 2018. He was a general contractor. Gary lived in Plumerville. He was 63.

William Clayton McBride (HIST/POL SCI ’89) died on June 20, 2018. Clay served in the U.S. Army and was deployed to Iraq. He gave 25 years of service to the Russellville Police Department. Clay lived in Russellville. He was 53.

Thomas Raburn Perez (AGBU ’89) died on Sept. 17, 2018. He owned and operated Alloy Wheel Repair Specialists in Independence, Mo. Tom lived in Blue Springs, Mo. He was 52.

Kevin Cecil “KC” Hansen (ECON ’90) died on July 2, 2018. He worked in banking and finance, most recently as a finance manager for Agricredit Acceptance Corporation. KC lived in Ola. He was 61.

Gary Allen Jacobs (BUAD ’91) died on Feb. 11, 2019. Gary lived in Dover. He was 49.

James Kevin Luker (HIST ’92 & M.L.A. SOC SCI ’94) died on Jan. 20, 2019. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Jim lived in Conway. He was 63.

Karen Duran (PSY ’93) died on Aug. 12, 2018. She was a social worker. Karen lived in Russellville. She was 72.

Martha Lynn Hankins Pilgram (NURS ’94) died on Nov. 2, 2018. She was a nurse in the Russellville School District. Martha lived in Russellville. She was 71.

Mary Ellen Keener (ENGL ’95) died on Jan. 21, 2019. She taught at Crawford Elementary School in Russellville for more than 20 years. Mary Ellen lived in Russellville. She was 70.

Phillip Michael Kerry (MECH ENGR ’00) died on June 10, 2018. Phillip lived in Mandeville, La. He was 49.

Danny Jay Lynch (REHAB SCI ’01) died on June 30, 2018. He worked for Friendship Community Care, BOST Inc. and Arkansas Rehabilitation Services. Danny lived in Russellville. He was 43.

Joshua S. Gossage (RPA ’04) died on Aug. 4, 2017. He was employed by Arkansas State Parks at Mount Magazine. Joshua lived in Mountainburg. He was 35.

Mark Benjamin Jones (EAM ’06) died on Aug. 23, 2018. Mark lived in Dover. He was 64.

John F. Corley Jr. (AAS-GT ’08) died on Jan. 9, 2019. John lived in Havana. He was 56.

Cori Lyn Harrington (CERT-HIT ’13) died on July 21, 2018. She was employed at Sparks Clinic Family Practice. Cori lived in Booneville. She was 44.

Meredith Rainwater (AAS-BUS TECH ’13) died on Nov. 3, 2018. She was a teacher’s aide at Euper Lane Elementary School in Fort Smith. Meredith lived in Greenwood. She was 38.

William D. Johnson Jr. (BPS ’14) died on Nov. 5, 2018. Bill lived in Hot Springs. He was 48.

Lauren P. Anderson Clark (REHAB SCI ’17) died on July 24, 2018. She was pursuing a doctoral degree in occupational therapy at the University of Central Arkansas. Lauren lived in Brinkley. She was 23.

Carole Ann Horner (STAFF) died on Sept. 25, 2018. She was an elementary school teacher and later served as an administrative assistant in the Arkansas Tech Department of Nursing. Carole lived in Russellville. She was 76.

Theresa Motley (STAFF) died on April 5, 2019. She worked at Arkansas Tech for more than 35 years and held the position of associate director for support services in the ATU Office of Information Systems at the time of her passing. Theresa lived in Russellville. She was 61.

Tim Small (STAFF) died on Feb. 15, 2019. He was employed in the Arkansas Tech Office of Facilities Management and was a licensed plumber. Tim lived in Marshall. He was 53.

Elliott William Brown Jr. (FMR FACULTY) died on March 18, 2019. Bill served on the engineering faculty at Arkansas Tech from 1959-63. He joined the family business, Brown Steel Contractors Inc., in 1964 and went on to serve as vice president, president, executive vice president and member of the board of directors. Bill lived in Newnan, Ga. He was 90.

Dr. Phillip R. Rutherford (FMR FACULTY) died on Sept. 20, 2018. He served as a professor of English at Arkansas Tech beginning in 1986. Phillip lived in Roxton, Texas. He was 78.

Clarence E. Robberson (FMR STAFF) died on March 3, 2019. He was the farm foreman at Arkansas Tech for almost 40 years. Clarence lived in London. He was 86.
