Arkansas Tech University–Ozark Campus has changed the name of its business and industry division to workforce and economic development.
Ryan Mikles, ATU-Ozark vice chancellor for workforce and economic development, explained that the change is aligned with ATU-Ozark’s mission to fully support its students and employers while building upon the strength of Arkansas’ workforce.
The division works with businesses and industry partners to provide training and education that meets workforce needs and helps employees develop skills for their career.
Mikles stated that the new name supports the connection between that work and the economic growth of the region and state.
“This name change more directly aligns with who we are and what we do,” said Mikles. “Workforce development is at the core of our work, and our partnerships with business and industry focus on strengthening the workforce, supporting employers and contributing to economic growth across the region. Workforce and economic development go hand in hand, and this name better reflects our ongoing work.”
The division has seen growth in its professional and specialized training offerings. In 2025, the number of classes increased by 23.5 percent, and the number of students served grew by 62.2 percent.
That growth has continued into 2026. Year to date, the division has already surpassed the number of classes offered last year.
Dr. Sheila R. Jacobs, ATU-Ozark chancellor, said the new name better represents the division’s impact on the region and its commitment to meeting the needs of Arkansas employers.
“The education, training and services we provide have a direct impact on the strength of our workforce, the competitiveness of our employers and the economic vitality of the communities we serve,” said Jacobs. “ATU-Ozark is committed to anticipating and responding to evolving industry needs, equipping Arkansans with the skills required for rewarding careers and working alongside our partners to build a stronger, more prosperous region and state.”
Through its workforce and economic development division, ATU-Ozark will continue working with area employers to identify training needs and provide opportunities that support their employees and businesses. Recent training additions include four new micro-credentials: essentials of supervision, industrial maintenance-mechanical, industrial maintenance-electrical and qualified behavioral health provider.
