Evans Studies Hotel Industry During Internship

Smiling faces, happy patrons and a festive atmosphere are what Arkansas Tech senior Grace Evans loves about planning events.

She’ll have the opportunity help plan several this summer during an internship in her hometown of Little Rock.

Evans is studying journalism with an emphasis in public relations, and this summer she is seeing the inner workings of the hotel industry during an internship at The Capital Hotel.

“Throughout the summer, I’ll be rotating around to each department of the hotel,” said Evans. “Each area, whether it is guest services, sales, banquets or housekeeping has an important role to play in making a hotel work seamlessly. I hope to have a better understanding of the entire process.”

For now, Evans is sharing her knowledge of her hometown with guests.

“At the moment, I am in the guest services area,” said Evans. “My journalism skills are really helpful because I am serving as a concierge. I answer questions people have about the hotel, Little Rock or Arkansas. Being able to communicate with anyone is really useful.”

Her hope is to better understand all that goes into orchestrating a successful event.

“I love events. I love the rush and the excitement of people enjoying themselves,” said Evans. “Through working with all areas of the hotel, I really feel like I will have a better insight into how to coordinate all the various activities for an event.”

After graduation, Evans hopes to pursue a career in event management and hopes this internship will help her prepare for the hard work it takes to be successful.

“In this field, you have to be very detail oriented and willing to strive for perfection,” said Evans. “Seeing a project through and seeing people enjoying the experience you have worked to create, is the reward and makes all of the hard work worth it.”
