ATU Student Earns National Dream Award

Arkansas Tech University student Amanda Condon traveled to Washington, D.C., in May to receive the Dream Award from Scholarship America.

According to the Scholarship America website, the Dream Award is a “renewable scholarship program for financially needy students who have overcome barriers and have successfully started their college education.”

As part of her experience, Condon visited the White House, networked with other 2017 Dream Award recipients, met with education policy makers and received a U.S. flag from Congressman John Ratcliffe.

“This flag was flown for Amanda Condon to celebrate her leadership and tenacity that serves as a beacon for others to follow,” reads a statement from Ratcliffe’s office that was sent to Condon. “Ms. Condon is a role model to others around her and her personal drive to never give up pushes others to continue striving far beyond their goals. Ms. Condon has not only beat the odds, she never forgot where she came from and now teaches others the value of education and how through hard work and the assistance of scholarships, anyone at any age can get a good education. Ms. Condon’s actions and leadership brings great credit upon herself, her supportive friends and family and the constituents of the Fourth District of Texas.”

A resident of Texarkana, Condon is pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in emergency management from Arkansas Tech through distance learning. She is on pace to graduate in May 2018.

Her future goals include earning a Master of Science degree in emergency management and homeland security from ATU with an eye toward a career with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
