Literacy Council Open House Oct. 23

The River Valley Literacy Council will host an open house on Tuesday, Oct. 23, from 5-7 p.m. at its new location at 209 Cedar Street in Dardanelle.

Headquartered at Arkansas Tech University-Ozark Campus, the River Valley Literacy Council came into being in September 2017 as a result of the merging of the literacy councils in Franklin, Johnson, Logan, Pope and Yell counties.

The purpose of the River Valley Literacy Council is to provide free, quality instruction and support to literacy seeking adults. Use of the new location was donated to the River Valley Literacy Council by the Dardanelle School Board and is housed in the former parents’ and teachers’ resource center.

Teaching within the council is accomplished through one-on-one tutoring and small group tutoring. Tutors help students with basic reading and writing skills, passing their GEDs, citizenship tests and more. All instruction and services are free of charge.

The public is invited to meet the new director, Meredith Martin-Moats, visit with tutors, meet students and the board as well as learn more about how the River Valley Literacy Council serves local communities during the open house. Refreshments will be served.

“We are so excited about our new location,” said Martin-Moats. “We are so grateful for this space and can’t wait to grow our services in the community.”
