K9s for Warriors Film Showing at ATU Nov. 1

Arkansas Tech University will host a special showing of a new film entitled “A New Leash on Life: The K9s for Warriors Story” on Thursday, Nov. 1.

The event will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Doc Bryan Student Services Center Lecture Hall, 1605 Coliseum Drive in Russellville.

There will be a welcome and introduction before the film begins. A reception will follow. Both the film showing and reception are free and open to the public.

One of the veterans featured in the film is ATU student Shilo Schluterman. A veteran of two overseas deployments with the U.S. Air Force Air National Guard, Schluterman has been paired with a service dog named Javelin since 2015.

Schluterman is on pace to graduate from Arkansas Tech during the 2018-19 academic year with a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology and a minor in sociology. Her career goal is to work in international relations in a capacity that will allow her to assist refugees and orphans.

A film crew visited ATU in February 2018 to interview Schluterman and capture footage of her going through her daily tasks with Javelin’s assistance. The documentary was directed by five-time Emmy Award winner Nick Nanton.

“A New Leash on Life: The K9s for Warriors Story” has been nominated for Emmy awards in four categories: best documentary, best director, best cinematography and best editing.
