A collaborative project between Arkansas Tech University and St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center Turning Point Adult Behavioral Health that started in 2014 reached a milestone on Saturday, April 13.
The ATU Out of the Darkness suicide prevention walk to benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention topped $100,000 in all-time donations by raising $12,637 during the 2019 event.
A total of 297 registered walkers participated in the 2019 ATU Out of the Darkness suicide prevention walk.
“This community never ceases to amaze me each year we host this event,” said Kristy Davis, associate dean for student wellness at ATU and co-director of the annual walk on campus. “It is an honor to welcome those who care so much about stopping suicide.”
Davis began the project in 2014 with co-director Tonya Oates of St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center Turning Point Adult Behavioral Health. Over the course of six years, the ATU Out of the Darkness suicide prevention walk has raised $106,077.
Data from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) shows that suicide is one of the two leading causes of death among Arkansans age 15-34.
