Wonder Boys Set for Weekend Classic

Arkansas Tech University’s men’s basketball team will be home for the holiday weekend when the Wonder Boys host a Thanksgiving classic at Tucker Coliseum in Russellville on Friday, Nov. 29, and Saturday, Nov. 30.

The Wonder Boys will host nationally 21st-ranked Northeastern State University at 6 p.m. Friday and nationally sixth-ranked Midwestern State University at 4 p.m. Saturday.

Additional games during the classic will pit Harding University against Midwestern State at 4 p.m. Friday and Harding against Northeastern State at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Below are capsules for all four teams competing in the classic. Tickets ($5 for adults, $3 for children/senior citizens) will be available at the Tucker Coliseum door. Admission will be free for those with a valid Arkansas Tech identification card.

Arkansas Tech University Wonder Boys (3-2)
Head Coach: Doug Karleskint (4th season, 72-26)
Leading Scorers: Junior forward Darrick Little (12.6 points per game), junior forward Marshawn Arnold (11.4 points per game) and junior guard Tyler Friedel (10.6 points per game).
Season So Far: Since switching from playing predominantly zone defense to man-to-man, Arkansas Tech is 2-0. The Wonder Boys tuned up for this weekend with a 103-44 win over Champion Baptist on Monday. Arkansas Tech leads the Great American Conference in scoring offense (90.0 points per game) and field goal percentage (.527).

Harding University Bisons (2-3)
Head Coach: Jeff Morgan (21st season, 351-225)
Leading Scorers: Senior forward Hayden Johnson (16.2 points per game), sophomore guard Jacob Gibson (11.4 points per game) and sophomore forward Andraz Kavas (10.4 points per game).
Season So Far: Harding began the season ranked No. 25 in the nation at the NCAA Division II level, but the Bisons have lost three of their last four games. Christian Brothers University made 18 free throws in overtime to defeat Harding 85-76 on Tuesday night. The Bisons lead the GAC in free throw percentage (.809).

#6 Midwestern State University Mustangs (5-0)
Head Coach: Nelson Haggerty (3rd season, 56-13)
Leading Scorers: Senior guard Monzaigo Williams (18.2 points per game) and senior guard DeJuan Plummer (15.4 points per game).
Season So Far: Midwestern State scored a pair of impressive non-conference wins Nov. 15-16 when the Mustangs defeated Northwest Missouri State University and Missouri Western State University during the Hillyard Tip-Off Classic in St. Joseph, Mo. The Mustangs rank second in the Lone Star Conference in 3-point field goal percentage defense (.293).

#21 Northeastern State University RiverHawks (4-1)
Head Coach: Larry Gipson (17th season, 268-189)
Leading Scorers: Senior guard Bryton Hobbs (22.2 points per game) and junior guard Michael Harmon (11.6 points per game).
Season So Far: Northeastern State won its first four games of the season and climbed as high as No. 10 in the NCAA Division II top 25 poll, but an 83-49 loss at the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith on Saturday dropped the RiverHawks from the ranks of the unbeaten. Northeastern State leads the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association in turnover margin (+3.2 turnovers per game).
