Wonder Boys Reach National Quarterfinals

Arkansas Tech University was among the final eight teams standing at the NCAA Division II Men’s Golf Championships for a third consecutive year.

Head coach Luke Calcatera and the Wonder Boys advanced to the 2019 national quarterfinals by completing the stroke play portion of the event with a 54-hole team score of 870 at the Resort at Glade Springs in Daniel, W. Va., May 20-22.

Austin Gean was Arkansas Tech’s top stroke play performer. He recorded rounds of 72-69-72 for a 3-under par total of 213 and a share of sixth place in the individual standings.

Shawn Tsai (T-11th, 67-74-73-214), Andre Jacobs (T-50th, 73-74-74-221), Francois Jacobs (T-52nd, 76-72-74-222) and Kellen Gray (T-83rd, 76-74-80-230) also helped the Wonder Boys advance to medal match play.

Arkansas Tech’s season ended when the University of West Florida defeated the Wonder Boys 5-0 in the national quarterfinals on May 23.

Five men’s golf programs reached the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II Championships in 2017, 2018 and 2019.

Of those five, four — Barry University, Florida Southern College, Lynn University and the University of West Florida — are located in the Sunshine State.

ATU is the only men’s golf program outside of Florida to reach the national quarterfinals in each of the last three seasons.
