Henderson State University swept a three-game Great American Conference baseball series from Arkansas Tech University at Clyde Berry Field in Arkadelphia on Friday and Saturday.
The Wonder Boys (6-10 overall, 2-4 GAC) are scheduled to host Northeastern State University for a non-conference game on Tuesday, March 1, at Tech Field in Russellville. Weather permitting, first pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
Game One: HSU 6, Arkansas Tech 5
Alan Hall drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the 10th inning to force Byrious Hughes home with the winning run in a 6-5 Henderson State victory over Arkansas Tech in the series opener on Friday night.
Kaleb Warden was 3-for-4 with two runs scored, Kyle Love finished 2-for-4 with a home run and two runs batted in and Mark Vaughn went 2-for-4 for the Wonder Boys.
HSU’s Jordan Taylor was 3-for-5 with a home run, three runs scored and two RBIs.
Jay Hawley (1-1) pitched one scoreless inning of relief for the Reddies to earn the win.
Arkansas Tech reliever Brandon Bohuslav (1-2) was saddled with the loss after allowing one unearned run in two innings.
Game Two: HSU 6, Arkansas Tech 3
Henderson State used a three-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat Arkansas Tech 6-3 in the first contest of a doubleheader on Saturday.
Matt Evans broke a 3-3 tie when his sacrifice bunt to first base squeezed Alex Morgan home with the go-ahead run for the Reddies. Hall added an RBI single and Hunter Mayall delivered a sacrifice fly to give Henderson State a 6-3 lead after seven innings.
Blake Patterson and Nick Vanthillo emerged from the Reddie bullpen to record the final six outs without incident. Vanthillo was credited with his second save of 2016.
Love homered for a second consecutive game for the Wonder Boys. Warden and Josh Watkins contributed two hits apiece in a losing effort.
Hawley (2-1) recorded the final out in the top of the seventh inning and was credited as the winning pitcher.
Arkansas Tech starter Issac Hale (1-3) was charged with four runs on seven hits in six innings.
Game Three: HSU 4, Arkansas Tech 3
A last-chance rally by Henderson State sank Arkansas Tech 4-3 in the series finale on Saturday afternoon.
The Wonder Boys built a 3-1 lead behind an RBI single by Parker O’Dell, a Love RBI single and a sacrifice fly by Vaughn.
Down to their final three outs, the Reddies tied it on a two-run single by Mayall and won it in walk-off fashion on an RBI fielder’s choice off the bat of Hayden Lessenberry.
Zach Eschberger (2-2) went the distance on the mound for Henderson State. He scattered eight hits over seven innings and allowed three runs.
Arkansas Tech starter Trent Armstrong (1-3) surrendered four runs on nine hits in six-plus innings.
