Ouachita Tops Wonder Boys 71-57

Ouachita Baptist University maintained its position atop the Great American Conference men’s basketball standings with a 71-57 victory over Arkansas Tech University at Vining Arena in Arkadelphia on Saturday.

It was the third consecutive win for the Tigers, who completed their first regular season sweep of the Wonder Boys since the 2007-08 campaign.

Ouachita Baptist (14-4 overall, 10-3 GAC) opened the game on a 10-1 run and led throughout. The Wonder Boys pulled as close as two points in the opening period, but OBU held Arkansas Tech without a made field goal over the final 4:14 of the half.

As a result, the Tigers were able to build a 31-22 advantage at the intermission. A spurt of seven unanswered Ouachita Baptist points early in the second half increased the margin to 42-26 with 16 minutes left, and the Tigers retained at least a 11-point spread the rest of the way.

Tirrell Brown and Colt Fason paced Ouachita Baptist with 22 points and seven rebounds apiece. Justin McCleary chipped in 13 points for the Tigers.

Clarence Willard had 16 points, seven rebounds and six assists for the Wonder Boys. Tech’s Darrick Little came off the bench to score 10 points.

The Wonder Boys (9-12, 5-8) will conclude a string of three consecutive road games by venturing to Weatherford, Okla., for a 7:30 p.m. GAC contest against Southwestern Oklahoma State University on Thursday, Feb. 5.
