No. 20 Golden Suns Earn Road Victory

Arkansas Tech University dominated the final seven minutes of the first half and avoided its first women’s basketball losing streak of the season by defeating Ouachita Baptist University 66-61 in Great American Conference play at Vining Arena in Arkadelphia on Saturday.

The nationally 20th-ranked Golden Suns (16-3 overall, 11-2 GAC) outscored Ouachita Baptist 19-4 over the final seven minutes of the opening period. The spurt began with a Katrina Hayden jump shot and ended with back-to-back 3-pointers to close the half by Anissa Pounds.

Pounds scored 10 points during the run and finished with a game-high 23 points.

Arkansas Tech went to halftime leading 34-26, and while it maintained an advantage throughout the second half, Ouachita Baptist never folded.

The Golden Suns briefly stretched their lead into double figures after a Pounds 3-pointer and two Fatima Adams free throws made it 59-49 with 6:38 remaining. Arkansas Tech put it away by limiting the Lady Tigers to just two made field goals over the final four minutes.

The win allowed the Golden Suns to maintain the distinction of not losing back-to-back games so far during the 2014-15 season. Arkansas Tech dropped a 57-52 decision at Southern Arkansas University on Thursday.

Adams notched 19 points and 13 rebounds for her ninth double-double of the season. Hayden finished with eight points and Caroline Eubanks added seven points for Arkansas Tech, which completed a regular season sweep of the Lady Tigers.

Katie Kapler scored 14 points, Katherine West netted 13 points and Kori Bullard had 11 points for Ouachita Baptist (7-13, 3-10).

The Golden Suns will play the last of three consecutive road GAC games when they visit Southwestern Oklahoma State University at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb 5. Radio station KWKK 100.9 FM and will have the play-by-play description.
