Johnson Breaks Wonder Boys’ Hearts 80-79

Rel Johnson’s 3-point play with 10.5 seconds remaining gave Henderson State University an 80-79 victory over Arkansas Tech University in Great American Conference men’s basketball at Tucker Coliseum in Russellville on Saturday afternoon.

The Wonder Boys attempted a potential game-winning shot during the final possession of the game, but the jumper from the lane was no good and time expired before R.J. Glasper’s put-back attempt left his hands. Video replay confirmed that his follow-up attempt, which went through the net, came after the clock showed zero.

The loss, combined with Henderson State’s 70-62 victory over ATU in the women’s game earlier in the day, marked the first time that Arkansas Tech was swept in a home conference doubleheader since Jan. 25, 2007. Tech had gone 103 consecutive home conference doubleheaders without suffering a sweep before Saturday.

Johnson scored a team-high 19 points for the Reddies (5-2 overall, 1-1 GAC).

Glasper finished with 30 points. He scored 26 points on 10-of-15 shooting from the floor in the second half.

Alex Brown added 12 points and Ramses Sandifer scored a season-high 10 points for Arkansas Tech (2-4, 0-2).

The Wonder Boys will step out of conference play for a 3 p.m. neutral-site contest against Eastern New Mexico University on Tuesday, Dec. 4.

The game will be played at Collin College in Plano, Texas. Radio station KCAB 97.1 FM/980 AM and www.arkansastechsports.com will provide live coverage.
