Golden Suns Sweep ECU Tigers

Arkansas Tech University extended its softball winning streak to four games by taking both ends of a doubleheader against East Central University at the Chartwells Women’s Sports Complex in Russellville on Friday.

The Golden Suns (12-10 overall, 6-4 Great American Conference) defeated the Tigers 9-4 and 4-3.

A second doubleheader between the two teams scheduled for Saturday was canceled due to hazardous field conditions created by heavy overnight rain.

Tech’s Gaby Vasquez and Sydnie Henson were both 3-for-4 with two runs batted in during Friday’s first game.

Makenzie Goins delivered a walk-off RBI double for the Golden Suns in the nightcap. Her shot down the right field line with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning drove in Bailey Bunch with the winning run.

ATU relief pitchers Bailey Shaffer (3-4) and Kristen Dempsey (3-2) earned the wins in the circle.

The Golden Suns are scheduled to host Southern Nazarene University for a four-game GAC series at the Chartwells Women’s Sports Complex on Friday, March 15, and Saturday, March 16.

Doubleheaders are booked to begin at 3 p.m. Friday and noon Saturday.
