Red Flag Campaign Comes to Tech

Arkansas Tech University students have the opportunity to learn about dating violence that occurs on college campuses during a public awareness campaign.

Julie Mikles-Schluterman, assistant professor of sociology, helped organize the events on the Tech campus, and she says the Red Flag Campaign addresses dating violence on campuses and will run through Friday, April 8 on Tech’s campus.

Mikles-Schulterman says the campaign is designed to encourage friends and campus community members to speak out when they witness warning signs, red flags, for dating violence in a friend’s relationship.

As part of the campaign, there are currently red flags on display in the Doc Bryan Student Services Building Courtyard.

Beginning next week there will be commitment boards in the cafeteria and in Doc’s Place so students, faculty and staff can commit to speaking out against domestic violence.

Tuesday marks the 2011 Sexual Assault Awareness Day of Action, and campaign coordinators are encouraging students to show support for the campaign on their Facebook profile picture.

Beginning at 11:45 a.m. on Wednesday, there will be a Red Flag Walk for Awareness and all students are encouraged to wear red.  Those wishing to participate in the walk should meet in the Doc Bryan Student Services Building Courtyard.

On Thursday, students will be able to attend the movie Tough Guise at 6 p.m. in Tucker Coliseum.  Following the movie, there will be a panel discussion on dating violence.

The following individuals will serve as panelists:

  • Keri A. Potts, Associate Director, Communications ESPN, founder of http://afightbackwoman.com
  • David Gibbons, Prosecuting Attorney of the 5th Judicial District
  • Marc Peters, MPS Candidate at Clinton School of Public Service and cofounder of MasculinityU
  • Dorinda Edmisten, Executive Director of the Ozark Rape Crisis Center
  • Cara Brewton, RN SANE A/P SANE Program Coordinator for the Crisis Intervention Center, Ft. Smith
  • Jesse Weis, Ph.D. Associate Professor of Sociology and Environmental Studies, University of the Ozarks

Throughout the campaign, students, faculty and staff will have the opportunity to help those who have been victims of violence.  Campaign organizers will be collecting items that will be donated to the River Valley Shelter for Battered Women and Children.  Those wishing to donate items may drop them off in the Room 356 of the Witherspoon Building.

Be sure to log back on ArkansasTechNews.com next week for more about the awareness campaign.
