Gaines Named Top Elementary PE Teacher

Arkansas Tech University alumna Cathryn Gaines is the Arkansas Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (ArkAHPERD) Elementary Teacher of the Year for 2013.

Gaines teaches physical education at Center Valley Elementary School in the Russellville School District. She received the award during the 2013 ArkAHPERD Conference Nov. 7-8 in Little Rock.

“I would not be the teacher I am today without my amazing professors at Arkansas Tech University, my Center Valley Elementary family and the Russellville School District physical education teachers,” said Gaines in a news release from the Russellville School District. “They have helped, supported and encouraged me throughout my teaching career.”

Gaines holds two degrees from Arkansas Tech. She received her Master of Education degree in physical education in 2012 and her Bachelor of Science degree in health and physical education in 2008.

She was the recipient of the 2012 Dr. John Cadle Award for most outstanding Master of Education graduate in the Arkansas Tech Department of Health and Physical Education. ArkAHPERD named her dance teacher of the year in 2010.

In addition to her duties at Center Valley Elementary, Gaines also serves as an adjunct physical education instructor at Arkansas Tech.

Gaines was nominated for ArkAHPERD Elementary Teacher of the Year by Dr. Shelia Jackson, professor of health and physical education at Arkansas Tech.
