Nagel’s Big Day Lifts Suns Over Hilltoppers

Arkansas Tech University’s Madison Nagel earned a piece of Great American Conference volleyball history during the Golden Suns’ 25-20, 25-8, 27-25 non-conference win over St. Edward’s University at Tucker Coliseum in Russellville on Friday afternoon.

Nagel made 31 digs in the win, the most by an individual player for a GAC member in a three-set match since the league began competition in 2011.

Kenzie Dozier paced the Arkansas Tech offense with 11 kills, while Hunter Eshnaur and Kaylee Konsella made 10 kills apiece. Amanda Milnick had a team-high 24 assists for the Golden Suns (10-7).

Arkansas Tech will host Philander Smith College (1 p.m.) and Williams Baptist College (5 p.m.) in non-conference play at Tucker Coliseum on Tuesday, Oct. 4.

2016 Tech Open House Saturday at RPL

High school students and other individuals interested in learning more about educational opportunities at Arkansas Tech University are invited to the 20th annual Tech Open House on Saturday, Oct. 1, at the Ross Pendergraft Library and Technology Center in Russellville.

The event, which is sponsored by the Arkansas Tech Office of Admissions, will last from 10 a.m.-noon with campus tours departing from the library every 15 minutes.

Representatives from every degree program offered at Tech will be available to answer questions and speak with prospective students. Personnel from academic advising, admissions, financial aid, residence life and university honors will also be on hand to provide information.

Current Arkansas Tech students seeking more information about a potential major field of study are also invited to attend the event.

Prospective students who attend Tech Open House will receive complimentary tickets to attend the Family Day football game between Arkansas Tech and Henderson State University at 6 p.m. that evening at Thone Stadium at Buerkle Field.

The Tech Open House door prize will be a fall 2017 tuition scholarship to Arkansas Tech. The scholarship winner will be announced during the Tech-HSU game.

Students Learn From Magazine Editor

Arkansas Tech University students interested in a journalism career had the opportunity to learn more about one career path in their field.

Johnny Sain, editor of ABOUT… the River Valley, spoke to Tech students involved int the Society of Professional Journalists about his experiences as a journalist and freelance writer.

During his visit, he shared the value of networking and ways to gain trust from an editor.

Sain, graduated from Arkansas Tech in 2015, and he began serving as the editor while still a student.

Arkansas Tech Provides Social Media Training

The Arkansas Tech University Office of University Relations will offer two opportunities for university constituents to gather additional information about representing the university on social media.

The first social media office hours are scheduled from 2-4 p.m. in the Baswell Techionery on Wednesday. During this time, Carrie Phillips, director of new media, will be on hand to answer any questions campus entities might have about using social media to represent the university.

Thursday will mark the first monthly social media training. The monthly training is set for Room 242 of the Doc Bryan Student Services Center. The training is required for those wishing to utilize social media on behalf of the university.

Take Part in Family Day 2016 on October 1

Arkansas Tech University will welcome parents, siblings, grandparents and other family members of its students to its Russellville campus on Saturday, Oct. 1, for Family Day 2016.

Family Day is one of the oldest and most popular traditions at Arkansas Tech. The event, which was originally known as Dad’s Day, has been part of the annual calendar at Arkansas Tech since 1924.

Arkansas Tech Family Day 2016 will begin with the fifth annual Family Day Jazz Brunch at Chambers Cafeteria from 9-11 a.m. Entertainment will be provided by the Arkansas Tech Jazz Ensemble and the Arkansas Tech Music Theatre Workshop. The event is free and open to all Arkansas Tech students and their families.

Tech Open House, which will take place from 10 a.m.-noon at Ross Pendergraft Library and Technology Center, will provide prospective and current students with information about the academic programs and student life offerings at Arkansas Tech.

Tech students and their families will have an opportunity to view student artworks in Norman Hall and learn about the history of the institution in the Arkansas Tech Museum at the Techionery. Both facilities will be open from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. on Oct. 1.

The Arkansas Tech Bookstore main location in the W.O. Young Building will be open from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on Family Day, while the location at Thone Stadium at Buerkle Field will be open from 5 p.m. until the end of the third quarter of the football game.

Party at the Plaza, the pre-game tailgating celebration outside Thone Stadium at Buerkle Field, begins at 3 p.m. on Centennial Plaza.

The party will include face painting, snow cones, inflatable bump-and-jump games and a free photo booth sponsored by the Arkansas Tech Alumni Association. Chartwells will serve a picnic-style buffet at Centennial Plaza.

Food trucks and live music will be featured at The Corner, which will take place on the former Taco Villa parking lot adjacent to the football stadium during Party at the Plaza.

Kickoff for a Great American Conference football game between Arkansas Tech and Henderson State University is set for 6 p.m. Tickets will be available at the Thone Stadium at Buerkle Field ticket office.
