Tech Debate Team Opens Season at UAM

Arkansas Tech University finished third in overall team performance for individual International Public Debate Association (IPDA) debate during the 2015 Weevil Wars debate tournament hosted by the University of Arkansas-Monticello during the first weekend in October.

Sierra Abram, Rebecca Lawson and Jonathan Williams represented Arkansas Tech in the varsity division, while Tech students Markayla Stanley, Meeka Smith and Justyn McEntire competed in the junior varsity division. Michael O’Brien, Austin Grothe and Heather Catlett were Arkansas Tech’s novice division participants.

Abram, Lawson, Stanley and Catlett qualified for the octofinals in their respective divisions.

Smith won first place for junior varsity IPDA. Lawson captured fourth place in varsity IPDA, and Catlett finished fifth place in novice IPDA.

Traveling with the team to serve as volunteer judges were Arkansas Tech students Dausen Duncan, Austin Painter and Tamara Adkins.

The Arkansas Tech debate team will continue its fall 2015 schedule by competing at LSU-Shreveport during the first week of November.
