Riley Speaks to Class on Juvenile Justice

Members of Dr. Jason Ulsperger’s juvenile justice system course at Arkansas Tech University welcomed guest speaker John Riley, drug court coordinator for the 5th Judicial District, to a recent class meeting.

Riley spoke to the class about diversion, delinquency and aspects of juvenile corrections. As part of his presentation, Riley mentioned that many children in the juvenile system lack access to adequate resources.

In response, students in the juvenile justice system course collected and donated 180 care packs with personal hygiene items to assist youth in need in the 5th Judicial District.

“It was an honor to have Mr. Riley come and speak to our students,” said Ulsperger, associate professor of sociology at ATU. “It is also a privilege to have a group of students who want to help make the lives of children better.”

Students in Ulsperger’s class also collected information on resources available to at-risk youth in the 5th Judicial District. Ulsperger plans to submit that information as part of a report to the Arkansas Supreme Court.
