Camp Brings Students from China to ATU

Fifty-two high school students and teachers from China departed the Arkansas Tech University campus in Russellville on Thursday, July 27, to return home following a two-week stay at the 2017 ATU Great American Adventure Camp.

Hosted by the International and Multicultural Student Services Office (IMSSO) and the English Language Institute at ATU, the camp combined classroom instruction in English with cultural opportunities such as visiting Branson, Mo., learning how to play baseball, roller skating, meeting ATU campus ambassador Jerry the Bulldog, touring Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, hiking at Mount Nebo State Park and learning how to mountain climb at The Wall in Russellville.

Chinese students earn the opportunity to attend the ATU Great American Adventure Camp through their performance in English classes at home.

“We hope these students like what they see, have fun and want to come back to Tech as full-time students,” said Lindsey Ingmire, assistant director for programming in the ATU IMSSO. “This is a preview for many students who are already considering attending Tech. They want to come and see what it is like.”

Arkansas Tech was home to 452 international students representing 45 countries around the globe during the 2016-17 academic year.
