Students Host Commodity Drive for Area Agency on Aging

Members of the Arkansas Tech community have the chance to give back this holiday season through a commodity drive for Area Agency on Aging. The drive is part of an ongoing initiative within the Department of Behavioral Sciences to connect students to the community.

Arkansas Tech alumna Lynn Russell recently spoke to an introductory sociology classes about her work at the Area Agency on Aging of West Central Arkansas and how the organization provides support programs for the elderly.

“There are many people who are older without the benefit of family support,” said Russell. “It is important to make services available for them, whether they need help with food, a ride to the doctor’s office, or just someone to talk to.”

Some of the services the group provides include care-giving services, nursing home advocacy and a senior companion program.

Tech students in the Department of Behavioral Sciences are collecting items to donate to the organization to help them provide care for seniors.

For more information about donating items for the drive, contact Dr. Jason Ulsperger at julsperger@atu.edu.
